SEASON 04: VIENNA

Welcome IN THE GLASSHOUSE – the reality show where YOU decide which plant remains and is planted!

This season takes us to Vienna: in the green capital three invasive weeds and two exotic garden centre plants compete for the chance to be planted. Deselect the candidates by throwing them into the trash bin or sending them home! Will the winner of season 2, Novi Sad, win again? Very intrusive, but super-useful, estimated to be 70 million in Great Britain: Erich, the Japanese Knotweed! Or will Goldie prevail, winner of the first season? She made it on to Switzerland’s Black List – but don’t confuse her with common goldenrod! Billy may be a macho fern, but is actually highly sensitive and reactive. Vera is very modest. She sows her seeds in influencial heads. Poldi has created numerous identities for himself … he’s bursting with iron – a true hero of nature!

Who will win? For in the end, only one can be planted!

What happened before it happened:

Invasive, intensive – Tree of Heaven or Devil’s Spawn? Few trees divide opinion like she does: Stephie! Our most celebrated champion, the pilot planting of all plantings –we congratulate her on her 175th anniversary! A newcomer to Vienna… for 175 years! A silky ascent – from China, Stephie spun her way swiftly into the heart of Vienna! The Habsburgs’ great hope for garden grandeur. But instead of spinning silk, she spins stories: Stephie craved more… More media buzz and a leading role – right by St. Stephen’s Cathedral! But not everyone loves Stephie… behind her glamorous roots lies a destructive streak. Invited by the monarchy, battled by the city authorities. No wall is safe from her. What began as ornament turned into an urban force of nature. From threads to cracks in stonework. Once envisioned as a silk supplier, now famed for tearing walls apart. Simply divine! Stephie stays. Whether you like it or not. Stephie: Dominating the Dome. None gets closer to heaven – than Stephie at St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

In 2020, the first season took us to Vienna. Our winner of the first season shines golden yellow and was able to prevail by a huge margin: congratulations to Goldie, the Canadian Goldenrod! Now she is not only flourishing on the Swiss Black List, but also in the GLASSHOUSE! Our second season in Novi Sad, Serbia, ended in 2021 with a surprising winner by just one vote: He is tough and tangly, sly and very pushy, but also super useful: Erich, the Japanese Knotweed! 

„Invasive“ or „intensive“?

They love regulations and new buildings – they sprout where we build! The building dice have been cast… 

„Exotic“ or „eccentric“?

Don’t be so decorative… No, no, native insects – but – the air stays clean! Poldi, Goldie, Erich, Vera or Billy? Who will win? Because in the end, only one can be planted!

ERICH

The GLASSHOUSE even serves as a playground for faded Olympians…. Honor to Erich…. Knotty Erich, the Knotweed, wants to know: Can he build on his former glory? In 2012, millionaire Erich barricaded the construction of the stadium in London’s Olympic Park – almost successfully. Once a brilliant resident of the Wild Gardens, now widely banned…. In England, Erich is valued at around 70 million pounds. But- this Japanese Knotweed is tough, tangly and persistent. Erich, haven’t you already replaced some of your colleagues?

VERA, Aloe Vera.

There are so many succulents, but only Vera is the real deal, the true one! She sows her seeds in influencial heads and modestly makes do with very little. As a plant that has already been naturalized in large numbers, Vera wants to defend her cult status. Vera leads the densest groups – but what about when someone steps out of line? Even if she seems tough, she has a soft core. Don’t let her leaf you eating out of her hand!

Exotic or Invasive?

You brought them all in – who are you kicking out now? Are they all the same in The GLASSHOUSE? Put outside centuries ago – or brought in again and again. The deep fall: from former garden star to unwanted displacer: Will they succeed in changing their image again? Or can they defend their status as the most popular ornaments?

Who will win? Because in the end, only one can be planted!

GOLDIE

Our Canadian winner of the first season wants to know again – will Goldie win gold? Goldie is keen not just to be seen as an invasive alien plant in the field. Rather, she is hoping for increased wholesale sales again, where her yellow flowers shine attractively. But – don’t confuse her with common goldenrod! Is it Goldie’s turn now instead of standing next to the tracks? Back on track! Goldie, a real globetrotter? Is the Glasshouse her final destination or will she remain a silent observer beside the track?

Previously in Graz: Wall Clash?

Goldie – certainly no wallflower – grows tall, but Erich blocks her view. Erich protects her from the eyes of others. While Goldie is content with the disused tracks, Erich refuses to be deprived of the water. Just water? Mur water! Everything regulated? Protector or displacer? In any case, he won’t let himself be made small. But you don’t leave Goldie standing on the track! Goldie uses the rails to get to the destination faster. Even if Erich absorbs some heavy metal – gold just shines more!

POLDI

Annoying but tasty? Poldi wants to pluck out his image as an unwanted weed. A bit mysterious, Poldi? The weed likes to conceal his true title – what identity will he let sprout in the GLASSHOUSE Instead, he is stuck deep in the buttoned uniform of his past- small plant, big flower. Bursting with iron and protein, a true nature hero – so there’s no question of being small-flowered! Labeled as invasive, Poldi can cause significant economic damage, but freezes immediately at the first frosts.

BILLY

acts as a macho fern – or is he hiding a little sword fern inside him? He reacts, acts, contacts super fast – but is extremely sensitive. Outside, he is sometimes known as a squatter. In the market, Billy hangs out pumped full of fertilizer. Now he is in the GLASSHOUSE to show everyone that there is more to the sensitive „exotic“ than just a decorative piece of jewelry. Will the image change work? In any case, he creates clean air between the candidates. Throw some shade- Will he outshine everyone or wither away as a wallflower?

Romance…

Erich – invasive or intense? Between Vera and Erich, there seems to be some tasty chemistry – ooh la la! While Vera flirts with nutrients and vitamins, Erich is tooting his own woodsy tune. But is it all real… or just a “A-loe”-ver story? Vera is not one to veer off course for long – she grants no favors, hits back with venom – but for Erich, the heavy metal guy, that’s just music to his ears. There’s no end to what you can do with Erich… Make jam or even build flutes, for example. But can you boil down Knotty Erich?

Bloomance, Bromance or friends with benefits?

Oho – what is blossoming here? Is it just a bloomance, or can these tender shoots withstand the tough battle of planting roots? Billy and Poldi both like it hot – and a little moist. Small men and big bushes? Will Billy’s interest in Poldi last, or is it just his fascination with Poldi’s past? What blooms quickly, withers even faster?
